Just curious, does any one know what the top speed of the 1.6L is? Is it speed or rev limited? I had mine up to 105mph but my female friend in the passenger seat started freaking out when I told her how fast we were going..... OOPS!!!!

I generally follow the posted limits - no moving violations in over 40 years of driving.
But after running some "rule of thumb" numbers a 1.6 should be able to do 110MPH +/-.

You'd need to know the final drive ratio, maximum engine RPM's and tire diameter to determine theoretical top speed.

So to answer your question RPM's would be the limiting value and how far you push it past the red line before something breaks. The engine controls might stop you from revving past the red line.

In addition to the factors you listed, aerodynamics (or rather lack of) probably affects the top speed of the FE as much as anything. While not exactly identical mechanically and weight-wise, an interesting comparison would be comparing the top speed of a Focus ST and FE 2.0. I suspect the ST would be much faster due to better aerodynamics.

Surely it can go as fast as the highest numbers on the speedometer indicate, right? ;)

The top speed is dictated by allot of things as some others have mentioned but the most important limiting factor are you're tires. The factory tires on the Escape are only "T" speed rated for 118mph. If you want to go faster than that you'll have to find tires with a higher speed rating and buy a programmer that will let you remove the factory speed limiter.

You might want to try that by yourself next time. I am not against high speed just usually do it by myself, on a road by myself, so I only injure, myself.

I doubt you can blow up a 1.6. The computer wont allow it.

Your friend was probably right to be concerned lol these new cars get quick and quiet. Obviously always do it in a safe and legal environment but the 1.6 is limited to 118 and the 2.0 at 120 I believe. Obviously their is aftermarket products to remove this and if you are going downhill you'll go faster if you are gauging your speed by navigation or a sat device. Be safe and don't risk your passengers ;)

Had our 2.0 awd up to 101 (digitally) the other day and it was bearly breathing hard at all. Felt like 85 or so.

I just can't see the point on going that fast in a SUV like the Escape. Maybe if we talk about a Cayenne or a Range Rover Sport but a Escape?
